Aqualog profiler, sensors, parts, using, repair and maintenance.

To configure the Aqualog Profiler at the factory it is required that a prospective client specifies several oceanographic sensors from the list. This information is needed to provide complete set of the instrument fittings and the underwater cables. A client often tends to choose the sensors, which were obtained earlier to extend their services during a profiler survey.

The capability to assess both differential and integral characteristics of the ocean coupled with slow, steady motion allows the profiler to resolve fine vertical structures. A single set of sensors can be used, instead of several sets of sensors at fixed depths, which greatly reduces both the cost of a survey and the time spent on instrument maintenance and calibration. Such a system can collect regular profiles over a large depth range (e.g. 500 m) at high temporal and vertical resolutions at fixed geographical location over continental slopes or in the open ocean during a season or longer.

The AQUAscat ® 1000s Acoustic Backscatter System  transmits pulses of high frequency sound on 4 transducers, each of which may operate at a different frequency in the range from 500 kHz to 5 MHz. It measures the sound scattered by sediment or other suspended materials at discrete spatial intervals programmable from around 2? millimetres to several centimetres.

The Aqualog profiler designed specifically to enable the deployment by a diver to achieve the goal of reduced maintenance cost. The profiler can be mounted on a pre-deployed mooring line by a dive team and then started by magnetic key in the water. Similarly, the profiler can be retrieved by a dive team, provided its minimum depth is accessible. These features make deployment easier and reduce mooring maintenance costs.

The underwater acoustic modems S2CR 7/17, produced by EvoLogics GmbH, are currently being considered for integration into the data communication system of the Aqualog profiler. Reliable operation below the seasonal  thermocline at the distances up to 4 km.

Main applications: operational oceanography, global change research, environmental monitoring, polar oceanography.

To work, the following Akualog profiler supplies:

Battery pack Standard housing Extended housing
Alkaline D-size batteries 60 pcs 960 Wh 72 pcs 1050 Wh
Lithium D-size batteries 2 60 pcs 2760 Wh 72 pcs 3310 Wh
Voltage 8.5 – 13.5 VDC
Peak pulse electric current 6 Ð
Current at sleeping  mode 0.1 mA

For this task may be used the following sensors:

  • Nortek Aquadopp current meter
  • RDI Doppler Volume Sampler (DVS)
  • AQUAScat1000 acoustic backscatter meter

Mooring equipment, subsurface flotation, wires, using, repair and maintenance.

The Aqualog Profiler can accommodate an inductive SBE IMM modem to transfer the data and the telemetric information. Data is transferred real-time to the subsurface flotation by using inductive modems. Then the tether transmits the information from the subsurface flotation to the surface buoy. The wire rope, in contact with seawater at each end, conducts electrical signals in a loop, where seawater is the electrical return path. IM devices couple to this loop inductively along the insulated (jacketed wire) part of this loop without direct electrical connection. The coupling is achieved using a toroid transformer in which the mooring wire and seawater return form a single winding. Since there is only one current path, only one device can transmit at a time (half-duplex).

The Aqualog Profiler can accommodate a hydroacoustic Benthos ATM modem to transmit the data and the telemetric information. Data is transferred real-time to the subsurface flotation by using inductive modems. Then the tether transmits the information from the subsurface flotation to the surface buoy.
